Max Baker is no doubt one of the key artists flying the flag for good quality drum and bass right now and with a bunch of well supported releases still in many DJs virtual record boxes, his time with Nicky Blackmarket’s Kartoons is now. The ‘Back to Basics’ EP features a heavy dose of real music, obviously influenced by Max’s classically trained brain and memories of losing the plot at many grotty events up and down the country. Vibes from ‘94, production from ‘21.
Take ‘Slithery Snake’ for example with its luscious pads and intertwining beats which in turn, morph into trademark rough and tumbles which fans of Baker’s will doubt lap up. Grafta MC links up for the ride on ‘Telepathic’ adding his laid back wordplay skills to the mix, switching in and out of low end rumbles and skippy breaks. A winning formula and certainly not the first time these two have featured on a track together.
‘Untitled Business’ harks back to the glory days of underground music with a big salute to one of the scene's original microphone champions. It’s mashed up beats connect with skatty synth stabs and over the top basslines. ‘Interruption’ feels a bit like 5am in the morning, looking up at the rising sun, looking down at your mashed up Air Max’s and loving every goddamn second of it. “Who wants one more tune?” We know we do...
