Hot on the heels of the first monster release via Kartoons by Nicky Blackmaret and Voltage comes producer of the moment, Leaf, with ‘Fire’ and ‘Spooks’. If this one was pressed to vinyl, it would most certainly have been a double A side!
Straight up and into the heat comes ‘Fire’. A hard stepping beast of a tune with muddy breakbeats, rumbling basslines and a distinctly haunting bell tone. Perfect for switching the mood in the dance or when the smoke machines are fogging out the venue, it’s a grubby monster with a downright dangerous vibe.
Atmospheric chords lead into the intro of ‘Spooks’ alongside a bunch of delayed vocals. It’s somewhat of a surprise when the bassline drops, to say it’s unexpected is an understatement and will have inexperienced DJs gagging for a way out of the mix. For those will a little more time behind the decks it’s going to be September’s weapon of choice - trust me!
Leaf’s signature production skills are all over this release and with more in the pipeline it’s clear that he’s one of the few to watch for 2016 and beyond.
